while at previous conferences new developments and suggestions for new HTML-tags and attributes had been presented, this time the news was rather sad: HTML is dead.

on the other hand, XML (eXtensible Markup Language) seems to be the solution for everything. it is better than HTML and brings all the neat things we were missing for years, such as the ability to define new tags and attributes, a means to add Math to web documents (MathML), features to synchronize the appearance of multimedia elements such as images, sound and animations through SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) etc.
