Welcome from the WWW2002 Program Co-Chairs

On behalf of the Program Committee, we are pleased to welcome you to WWW2002 in Honolulu. We received a record number of 454 submissions this year, a 16% increase over the previous record. We accepted 72 papers for the proceedings and presentation at th e conference, an acceptance rate of 15.9%. All papers were rigorously reviewed by the technical program committee which was divided into the following ten areas:

Submissions to the Electronic Commerce and Security area were up 58% from last year, and the 10 papers chosen cover topics including web application and P2P security, advertising and security for ecommerce, auctions, paid placement, and privacy. The focu s of the Languages track is the design, development, and usage of the languages that govern structured information on the Web. The searching, querying, indexing, and crawling area received the most submissions with close to 100. This has been the case of other recent WWW conferences as well. This is the first year that WWW has had a Semantic Web area, to which over 50 papers were submitted.

There are also a number of additional papers being presented in alternate tracks which are being published separately from the main proceedings. The Practice and Experience track includes a number of short papers that were referred from the refereed track . In addition to the W3C track and the established alternate track areas such as Education and Global Community, a Web Engineering track has been introduced, and this may become an area of the main refereed track in the future.

Several people contributed to the success of the program. In particular, Jodi-Ann Ito and Iris Takamiya offered outstanding logistical support throughout the entire process.
